5 Reasons to Move Back Home After College

By Kylie Exline on February 5, 2016

Okay, so if we are being completely honest with ourselves, we don’t really  want to be informed on the perks of moving back in with our parents. This is literally the last thing most seniors want to hear, and I am sincerely sorry in advance. However, if you’re already freaking out about the inevitable graduation, read these five pros to give you slight hope for your (our?) future.

Saving cash.

1. Saving Money

It is no secret that if we move back in with the ‘rents post college, we will definitely be saving money. There is all of the cash spent on rent, electric, water, and let us not forget about the many times we are coerced into going out. Drinks do not buy themselves, people. With clubbing less of a norm and having some leftover cash after grocery shopping, our savings account should be rejoicing with glee. And our livers.

2. Time to Re-evaluate

I can see it now: lounging on Ma’s couch, stuffing Doritos down my throat, while constantly refreshing my Twitter feed. If that scenario is one you already had painted, time to rethink your goals. The whole point of going away to college and earning a degree is to find a job that you somewhat like (hopefully). Send those resumes out, make a pro and con list of cities you’d like to maybe live in, and stop wasting time. You got thisss.

Hourglass wasting away.

3. Focus on the Future

Though it is annoying, try to think of where you see yourself five, maybe ten, years from now. Do you see it living in your high school room, or do you see it living on your own, with a dog named Lucky? We are consistently told to focus on our dreams and aspirations, so by being back home, it can really act as a catalyst to get us out into the real world. Sorry mom.

4. Visiting the Cool Spots

When we are young, we dream about heading into bars, showing our real ID’s to the bouncer, and buying shots for everyone, or something along those lines. Just the idea of being somewhere legal sparks a flame that we cannot deny. If you get into an argument with your family, take comfort in the fact that there is a bar down the road that stays open till three. Oh, and did I mention it is ladies night?

Bar.

5. Reconnecting with the Fam

There are no more excuses as to why you cannot talk to your 15 year old sister, or take your cat to the vet. You are home and basically volunteering to run the errands, fill up the tank, and make dinner. But do not sweat it, it is preparing you for your future and need I say even more motivation to find a place like yesterday?

Although moving back home after college is certainly not ideal, it may be what needs to happen in order for us to get our foot through the door: the door of job opportunity and a 401K. We will be close to our family again, have time to visit bars our underage versions were never allowed, and be content with saving money. It can’t be that bad, amIright?
