5 Ways to Make Money in College

By Jorge Suarez on October 1, 2015

Is your bank account already empty? When you’re in college, money will almost always be tight. Luckily, college campuses are swarming with many different opportunities for students to make ends meet. Most of these jobs are flexible, and they should not interfere with your studies. So, if you are looking to make a little extra green during your time in college, read on, and consider some of these options.

  1. Tutor
A great way to learn a subject is to teach it. If you excel in any specific subject, you should consider selling your knowledge to other students. When you tutor other students, you can gain knowledge in the specific field, while also performing a valuable service and earning some cash. On average, most student tutors earn between $20 and $40 an hour. Also, if you’re an expert at English, you can use your skills to proofread other people’s work for a fee. If you are interested in tutoring, meet with an advisor or professor, or go to the campus tutoring center to find opportunities.
  2. Deliver Food
Local businesses are always looking for drivers to deliver food on college campuses. By delivering food to other students, you can actually make a pretty good income during your time in college. Unfortunately, this job is exclusive to students with vehicles, however, the pay is good with most delivery drivers making around $10 an hour. With this job, students may have to sacrifice and work evenings and weekends, so it is up to them to decide whether or not the job is worth it.
  3. Write Online
The internet is an endless frontier that is full of opportunity for people looking to make some extra money. If writing is your forte, you may want to consider writing online either as a freelance writer or a blogger. As a freelance writer, your pay may vary: you can be paid by the word, be offered a flat rate for a specific project, or you may be paid by the hour in some cases. If you look to pursue a career that involves writing, this can be also be a great start to building up your portfolio and making valuable connections that can help you obtain a more stable job in the future. In a similar way, starting a blog can help build up your portfolio while also letting you make some cash if you are willing to put in the hard work. You’ll only make a few cents per click on the ads on your page, but as your blog grows, and you get more followers, your income may expand over time.
  4. Sell your stuff.
Everyone has things that they either don’t want or don’t need. Instead of throwing these things out, why not sell them? Craigslist and eBay are the two sites where most people sell their products online. Clothes, bags, accessories, sports equipment, and/or electronics are all great things that most people will buy, as long as the products are in good condition. This is not only a great way for students to make money, but also a great way to clear out some clutter in your home.
  5. Create your own cleaning service.
Whether you are doing someone’s laundry, or cleaning a student’s dorm, becoming a cleaning service is a great way to make money off of other people’s laziness. By charging around $5 to $10 a load, you can make easy money doing people’s laundry while also using that time to catch up on your own studies. Many students also hate dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning the bathroom. Perhaps you may consider providing weekly or bi-weekly services to others in your dorm. Also, if you’re bold enough, you can offer your cleaning services to some of the fraternity and sorority houses on your campus. It may be dirty work, but you can end up making a decent living off of it.
