Picture this: You are dressed in something snazzy (possibly a very cute dress with heels clacking on the sidewalk, or a suit with a nicely matching tie) and you are walking down the street in New York, watching the hustle and bustle of people.

Your phone buzzes with incoming emails from your boss, and you hurry across the street to go get your usual venti iced coffee with sugar-free hazelnut syrup from Starbs to get you through the day.

You run outside the coziness of Starbucks—you are in a hurry as per usual—and thrust your hand in the air, like you learned in the movies, to hail a taxi. After three pass you, you are finally able to snag a yellow cab and speed off to your internship.

Two minutes on the clock and you manage to jump out of the cab, skip the elevator and glide up the stairs, and sit down at your nice little desk right on time, as usual. Ah, the life of the college internship in a big city.

Big city life can definitely be exciting, especially when you don’t have to live it all the time. If you get the opportunity to snag an internship in a big city, here are some reasons why you should take it.

1) Multiple opportunities:

Big cities like New York are buzzing with all kinds of jobs that are there for the taking. There will be more opportunities for internships themselves, and more opportunities to stay on with the company when the internship is over or move on to another place.

Big cities offer more in terms of variety, so you’d be able to find an internship in something you’d really want to do.

Take The Carrie Diaries for example. Carrie was originally interning at this desk job in New York that she wasn’t all that fond of, but on one of her lunch breaks, she meets up with this woman who helps her get an internship writing and doing editorial for a magazine, which is right up Carrie’s ally, who wants to be a writer.

2) A new experience:

I personally would never want to live in a city all the time, but I sure love to visit. It might be fun to be up in the hustle and bustle of a city, just until you get it out of your system.

Having an internship in a big city could get you a new experience, and maybe even show you that big cities are your calling. If they totally aren’t your thing, you could always live a bit away in a smaller town and just commute to your internship.

A way to really make it fun is to go far from home to really get the full experience, so if you live on the West Coast, go East, and vice versa. Sure, you might get homesick, but then for a while there really is no turning back, and that is the best way to give a place a fair chance.

3) A Starbucks on every block:

Cities are great because you can walk everywhere, and don’t need a car in your life. You can get your Starbucks fix whenever and wherever you need it, as well as try out some cool local places, and of course some greasy food on the street vendor carts.

Going on your lunch break will be a fun adventure every time because there are so many places to go in such a small proximity. So yes, you might have to make some frequent coffee runs for your boss, but at least it’s close right?

4) A reason for a new wardrobe:

As you can see from the “you” that I described in the beginning of this piece, big city people are always dressing up for everyday things. I personally love this idea, and considering I wear a dress almost everyday, would adore that part of the big city life.

Getting new clothes is always fun, and now you have a way to justify it! You have to look nice for your internship, right?

5) Connections:

Even if you don’t want to end up living in the big city after your internship is done, you know that the people you worked for will probably have connections in all sorts of places, and should be able to help you get a job, or at least talk you up to people, in the area of your choosing.

Also, being able to put on your resume that you survived the hectic atmosphere of working in a city will definitely help when it comes to getting a job because it will show you know how to handle pressure as well as get things done on a short deadline.

Now is the time to get out there and have amazing experiences. Take that internship in the big city, even if it’s far away from home or something that you would have never thought you would do. Go out there and do something different.

As this quote reminds us: “I always wonder why birds choose to stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth; then I ask myself the same question.”- Harun Yahya
