When College Friends Grow Apart

By Kristina Sossa on July 20, 2014

As I look forward to beginning my senior year at The Ohio State University, I have been realizing how fast it is about to go. Noticing that three years has already flown by in a blink of an eye, I know that once spring semester starts it will all be over before I know it. With the end of my college career also comes the end of a few friendships.

By the end of winter break, I plan to start looking for a new apartment and a new job a couple hours away from Columbus. Well, that is the plan for now, at least. While I look for a life elsewhere, a lot of my college friends are planning to stay in the city and with that being said, I will probably lose contact with a few of them. I know it sounds horrible to say, but I already know friends that I can guarantee I will no longer talk to after I move away from Columbus.

Don’t get my wrong, they are pretty great friends, but our interests have seemed to grow apart over the years. I feel as though we are starting to live different lifestyles, and there were a few times that they had failed to prove they are the kind of friend that I would keep for a lifetime. One of those times was when they sent me home in a taxi by myself because I accidentally drank too much and no one wanted to leave yet. There were a few more times, such as when it was in the early morning hours and I was ready to leave and they told me to walk home by myself. To me, that does not qualify as a lifelong friend trait. I would have walked them home, had they wanted it; I have been the drunk caretaker more times than I can count.

I know college is party time for a lot of people, but lately I have lost interest in getting drunk every weekend. These friends of mine love to get drunk and talk about it for the next two days. I am just like, “is that all there is?” Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy drinking excessively on occasion, but at some point I have enough. One of the girls wants us all to go on a cruise after we graduate, but I am avoiding that at all costs. They went on a cruise last spring break, so when I was at Disney with David making memories, they were drunk every day. I heard of some injuries they obtained while drunk and I don’t want to deal with that on vacation.

College is a great time to discover who you are and what you want in life. Unfortunately, with those amazing discoveries come some not-so-great ones, like finding out you know what friends you won’t mind losing after college. It is all a part of a social learning experience. I’m not worried about losing some friends to make room for the new ones I will make when I start my life in a new town or at a new job. I look forward to the changes that will come within the next few years of my life. Out with the old and in with the new.
